LIBRARIES AS PLATFORM FOR NATION BUILDING

Abstract


Libraries play a key role and have great importance in nation building and put countries on the path to progress. This paper looks at various types of libraries and their basic functions, their roles in nation building and challenges facing library services in Nigeria. Deduction where drawn from the content analysis of the literature review. The findings reviewed that lack of reading culture, inadequate fund to enable libraries produce current and relevant information resources, negligence by government and policy makers, language barriers, and low level of motivation for Librarians. Above all library can provide information improving productivity, hygiene, and information on business activities and promote democracy and social economic only, if the three tiers of Nigerian government knowing full well that no nation can prosper without reliable of information and no information can be properly managed and disseminated without functional library, and qualified Librarians and information scientist. Recommendations were made in line with the findings of the study.
